Port/Environmental Health Support Officers

Negotiable

Ashford, Kent

New Appointments Group

We are working in partnership with Ashford Borough Council on an exciting project for border control facilities designated to a site on the outskirts of Ashford, with a planned start date of March 2021 and a 'go-live' date of April 2021. The site will provide customs and transit checks required for hauliers following Brexit. There are a high number of roles to be filled on a permanent, fixed terms and temporary basis. The site will be operational 24 hours/365 days and will require candidates to commit to a work pattern covering these hours.

The Port/Environmental Health Support Officer roles will be undertaking a range of statutory duties to safeguard public health whilst conducting official controls including carrying out checks on imports of products of animal origin and high risk food not of animal origin in order to ensure that only products that are safe to eat enter the food chain. You will work independently and when legislatively required, under the supervision of Official Veterinarians or Port Health Officers.

You will be protecting public health by applying port health controls on imports in accordance with relevant statutory provisions, rules and international trading standards by performing physical, identity, documentary and seal checks in order to ensure that only products that are safe to eat enter the food chain. This will include checks of organic food, illegal unreported and unregulated fishing, animal composites and other relevant controlled goods.

Qualified with a relevant Level 4 qualification or certificate and trained/authorised to undertake specific extended role functions in such areas as IUU and/or Organics and be experienced in food control work and enforcement knowledge is an essential requirement.

It is desirable you are working towards a relevant food or science related subject at higher certificate level and are able to operate as an Official Fish Inspector. Candidates who possess specialist port health training and/or qualifications, will looked at favourably. Together with direct experience in port health, import/export controls and Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing provisions.
