Could you protect the waters around the Kent & Essex coasts by undertaking research and gathering information on the marine habitats and fish stocks found within it?

About the role
You will lead a small team developing research projects and carrying out survey work, following established methodologies as well as carrying out data recording and analysis. This work will be carried out both on land and at sea on one of our patrol vessels. You will also be carrying out a wide range of GIS projects, and developing new outputs from that analysis.
You will lead on the development of Habitat Regulations Assessments and assist with the completion of Impact Assessments for required management measures.
You will also be responsible for replying to consultations, liaising with marine agencies and attending meetings.
On occasions you would be expected to carry out warranted Fishery Officer enforcement duties, both on land and at sea, working as part of a small team on a patrol vessel as a member of the crew.

These duties would be carried out across both Kent and Essex with a requirement to spend at least 2 days per month in Essex, as well as occasionally outside the district.




About you

You must have a keen interest in the marine environment and a range of marine survey skills. You will equally enjoy outdoor field work and delivering desk based analysis and reporting. You will have well-developed skills and abilities in manipulation of data using GIS as well as be comfortable setting up and using survey and fishing equipment such as day grabs, and dredges. Highly self-motivated, you must have sound problem-solving skills and will be methodical, organised and have excellent attention to detail. You must have good written and verbal communication skills, be flexible and possess the ability to organise your own workload to meet deadlines, as well as to motivate others to do so. You will also be interested in being trained to carry out enforcement of fisheries and MPA legislation.

The first round interviews for this post will be held week commencing 2 March in Ramsgate, Kent. If you are selected for an interview you will be expected to provide a ten minute presentation to the interview panel.
