The Role

The Cathedral is looking to create a new team of enthusiastic, self-motivated and confident people to work in our beautiful and historic Cathedral.

The newly created Visitor Services team will be positive ambassadors for the Cathedral in everything that it does, providing a warm, professional, and unrivalled welcome to Rochester.

The role is for a two-year fixed term contract initially. Subject to funding, there is a possibility the role may be extended at the end of the two-year period.

As part of a new and evolving team at the forefront of interaction with the visiting public this role will play a huge part in increasing communication, engagement, and enjoyment for all visitors.

The Visitor Services team will consist of a Visitor Services Supervisor and three Visitor Service Assistants. The Visitor Services Supervisor (VSS) will oversee and manage the work of the Visitor Services Assistants (VSAs), as well as working actively as a hands-on VSA themselves. All Visitor Service roles will be based in the Cathedral, with the Visitor Services Desk as its base.

The VS team will also be required to engage with visitors in a friendly, appropriate and sensitive manner to increase the potential for income through various commercial streams. The ways in which the VS roles may do this are to encourage donations and gift aid, suggest visitors use the café, assist visitors with booking events and support any visitor purchases such as souvenirs, guidebooks and stationery.

Although primarily operational during core visiting hours the VS team will also be required to support visitor needs during out of hour events such as exhibitions or private functions. The VSS role requires working some weekends, Bank Holidays and some out of hours working. Some items of corporate uniform, including a name badge, will be provided and will be required to be worn by both the VSSs and VSAs.

The Visitor Service Supervisor role will report directly to the Chapter Clerk -Executive Director (CCED). The Visitor Service Assistants will report to the VSS. The team will also work closely with the volunteers, vergers, Events Officer, and Commercial and Marketing Manager as well as the Clergy.
