The School of Cultures and Languages is seeking to appoint a Japanese Tutor to support students with their learning. This role would sit within the Language Centre, of which Japanese is one of several taught languages.

As Japanese Tutor you will be responsible for delivering language teaching, which will involve preparations of classes; preparing and making assignments and tests. You will be expected to convene modules, organise and participate in recruitment. In this role you will be called upon to contribute to the design of the new year in a Language programme.

We are offering this role on a fixed-term basis to cover maternity leave an full time.

As Japanese Tutor, you will:

design a new programme in collaboration with Language Centre Staff.
deliver language teaching as required for approximately 240 hours over the duration of the contract. These will be distributed over two terms of 12 weeks each (10 teaching weeks and 2 assessment weeks) and does not include recruitment activities or tests/exams. Teaching may include evening classes once a week.
set and mark assignments including assessing student progress and providing feedback to students as required
participate in oral examinations where necessary

To succeed in this role you will have:

a postgraduate degree in a cognate discipline
native or near-native command of Japanese language
experience of student academic and pastoral support in the University context
the ability to communicate with clarity and enthusiasm, both verbally and in writing

The Language Centre is a thriving community of staff and students who are passionate and dedicated to teaching and learning languages. The Languages Centre offers Mandarin, Japanese, Arabic and Russian as elective and core modules for the whole University of Kent, in addition to French, German, Italian and Spanish. The Centre sits within the newly founded School of Cultures and Languages, with the Department of Comparative Literature and the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics. Home to more than 300 students and 30 members of staff, the School is a tightly bond community of teachers, researchers and students, where teaching and learning a language is an exciting collaborative opportunity.
