Catastrophe Research Analyst



* 12 Month Fixed Term Contract
* To £80,000 + benefits package
* Location: City of London and remote working hybrid flexibility



Our client is a leading global insurance group.



This is a maternity cover role. They are seeking a catastrophe research analyst to work on the development and implementation of the understanding and interpretation of risk. Through scientific knowledge of natural catastrophes, you will help to validate catastrophe models, develop model adjustments, and undertake research projects (e.g. on climate change) to drive forward the group research agenda.



Examples of accountabilities:

* Lead on dependent validation of catastrophe models, including designing testing plans, undertaking scientific tests, producing required regulatory documentation, and communicating the results to both internal and external stakeholders.
* Assist the Research Manager on the development of CAT risk interpretation, including the development of model adjustments where required.
* Undertake innovative research projects to assist with understanding and management of catastrophe risk (e.g. climate change, counterfactual analysis).
* Produce catastrophe risk governance documentation and research briefings.
* Provide catastrophe risk and natural hazard expertise to internal stakeholders as required (e.g. underwriters, exposure management, catastrophe modellers).
* Be a representative at external events (e.g. conferences) and committees (e.g. lighthill risk network), through participation in round tables, forums, and presentations.
* Follow the latest industry trends and new developments in natural hazards research.



Requirements for the role:

* Demonstratable research experience (Masters, PhD or equivalent work experience) in a relevant field (e.g. meteorology, hydrology, seismology, vulnerability or similar).
* Proficiency in oral and written communication, particularly the ability to communicate complex scientific ideas to a non-technical audience.
* Strong analytical and quantitative skills, including experience of working with large data sets and using programming packages such as R, Python and ArcGIS.
* Ability to think critically in order to form scientific and business judgements.
* Ability to manage projects and meet deadlines.
* Prior experience of using and/or validating catastrophe models (e.g. RMS, AIR) is desirable.
* Prior experience of building natural hazard models in the insurance industry or academia is desirable.
