Maintenance Operative

Location: Ashford School (East Hill) and Ashford Prep School (Great Chart)
Salary: £26,644.80 + up to £3,500 extra with optional On‑Call rota
Hours: Full‑time, 40 hours per week

Ashford School is seeking a proactive and friendly Maintenance Operative to join our Estates team. This is a hands‑on role where every day brings something different, helping to keep our buildings, grounds and facilities safe, secure and looking their best across two beautiful school sites.

You will carry out a variety of maintenance and repair tasks including basic electrical work, plumbing, painting, carpentry and general building upkeep. You will support the smooth running of the site by opening and closing buildings, ensuring the premises remain secure, assisting contractors and carrying out routine checks—including swimming pool testing and weekly fire alarm tests.

For those wanting to boost their income, the role offers an optional On‑Call and Lock‑Up rota, allowing you to earn up to £3,500 extra each year. This includes responsibilities such as weekend pool checks, supporting Saturday sports events, responding to emergency call‑outs, liaising with lettings, locking up buildings and acting as a key holder.

We are looking for someone practical, positive and adaptable, with experience in building maintenance and the ability to prioritise work in a busy environment. A driving licence is desirable. In return, you will enjoy working within a supportive team, a scenic working environment, a varied workload and 26 days’ annual leave plus bank holidays.

If you are a reliable team player who enjoys hands‑on work and takes pride in maintaining high‑quality facilities, we would love to hear from you.

Note - We reserve the right to interview and offer to a strong candidate prior to the closing date. It is strongly recommended that candidates submit their applications as soon as possible.

Closing date: 16th February 2026

Salary by negotiation and dependent on skills, attributes and qualifications of the successful candidate.  Applications are welcomed from ECTs or experienced teachers.

Ashford School is part of United Learning, a large and growing group of schools aiming to offer a life-changing education across England. As a group, we achieve more by sharing than any single school could.

Ashford School is an equal opportunities employer and welcomes applications from all suitably qualified candidates.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expect all staff to share this commitment. An enhanced DBS check is required for all successful applicants.
